POWER TO THE POLLINATORS:
GARDENING WITH NATIVE PLANTS

Discover the incredible world of native plants and their vital role in supporting our local pollinators! Instructors Clara Aus (Butterflies LIVE! Coordinator at the Garden) and Will Nelson (Digital Content Strategist at the Garden) will provide you with an understanding of native plant gardening, propagation and its positive impact on butterflies, bees and other essential pollinators. The class incorporates hands-on learning, including a walking tour of native plants in the Garden to observe pollinators in their natural habitat. Additionally, you’ll have the unique opportunity to explore the M&T Bank Butterflies LIVE! exhibit, gaining a deeper appreciation for the symbiotic relationship between native plants and pollinators. To kick-start your own native plant gardens for the fall, you’ll receive a selection of seeds and a plant that is native to the Richmond region.

All programs are subject to change.  NOTE: This class has been rescheduled from Saturday, September 23 to Saturday, September 30 due to Tropical Storm Ophelia.

Will NelsonAbout the Instructors

As the Digital Content Strategist at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Will Nelson has not only found a career but a deep-rooted obsession that has continued to blossom. In 2021, Will took his love for plants to the next level and founded “Will To Plant,” a venture that includes a backyard plant nursery and tabling at local markets. His expertise has led him to conduct workshops on plants and mushroom cultivation all across Virginia. Through these endeavors, he has brought the wonders of nature closer to the community, inspiring many to develop their green spaces and cultivate their own gardens. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener looking to expand your skills or a complete beginner, Will’s workshops are designed to cater to all levels, as he believes that anyone can develop a green thumb with the right guidance and passion.

Clara AusClara Aus is an avid bug collector and artist, having pinned hundreds of insect specimens for her personal collection as well as for Dr. Karen Kester’s VCU Bug Lab collection. A lifelong passion for insects combined with an Entomology course at VCU led her to join the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden team in 2022 as a Butterfly Educator in the M&T Bank Butterflies LIVE! Exhibit. In 2023, Clara became the Butterflies LIVE! Coordinator and dove deeper into the world of Entomology, especially Lepidopterans (butterflies and moths). She enjoys pollinator gardening, reading the latest Entomology research, and educating others about insects! Clara hopes to strengthen engagement with the community about how we can help native pollinators in Virginia and the surrounding states by planting native plants, being environmentally friendly, and raising awareness.
