A Feast for the Senses
Saturday May 31, 2008 to Monday September 1, 2008
Daily

Regular Garden admission

This summer Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden serves up "A Feast for the Senses" -- displays and containers throughout the Garden designed to engage the five senses.

What to Expect: A Feast for the Senses will progress through the summer as different plants flower and mature in special plantings along the main walkway and in the Children's Garden. Visitors will be made aware of each week's highlights through summaries provided in the Visitor's Center and by bright banners -- Look, Smell, Listen and Touch -- that will rotate weekly among different areas of the Garden.

Summer adult education classes are themed around the senses and there are some "tastings" planned during Flowers After 5 evenings. Please scroll down to learn more.

Here are some examples of sensory experiences:

  • Sight: Eye-popping and unusual color, including displays using new hybrid "green-eyed" Susans (also known as Irish eyes).  These large yellow-orange daisies with green eyes will be complemented by maroon and red foliage along the main garden pathway.
  • Touch: Plantings to tickle the imagination including grasses such as the red fuzzy heads of Pennisetum; the smooth trunks of dwarf crape myrtle; and the spiky form of yellow-edged yucca in juxtaposition with the delicate textures of small succulents.
  • Taste: Flavorful herbs to please the palate such as oregano, parsley and mint in the Children's Garden. Some of these herbs are used in our Tea House.
  • Smell: The fragrance of sweet-smelling blooms from trumpet lilies and Oriental hybrid lilies contrasting with the odor of "stinky" plants such as Stapelia. In order to attract flies for pollination, Stapelia emits a stench similar to rotting flesh.
  • Sound: Rustling seed heads from ornamental grasses such as sea oats against a melodic background of gurgling water and the soothing tinkle of wind-chimes.

In addition, the central border in front of the Conservatory will feature different themes including "cool" and "hot" color combinations; a cutting garden with plants including zinnias and Jewels of Opar; and a water garden display.

Summer Adult Education Classes: Advance registration required; $20 members; $30 non-members.

  • Sight -- "Nature's Palette: An Artist's Perspective on Color in the Garden" with Ann Chenoweth, July 18, 9 - 10:30 a.m.
  • Smell -- "Fragrance in the Garden" with Holly Shimizu, executive director of the United States Botanic Garden, Aug. 2, 9 - 10:30 a.m.
  • Touch -- "Texture in the Garden" with Don Haynie of Buffalo Springs Farm, Aug. 7, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. followed by a Garden Walk.

Tastings: Held on Flowers After 5 evenings; there is no advance registration, but regular Garden admission applies (free admission for members) and each tasting fee is $5 per person (including members).

  • July 17, 6 - 8 p.m. Australian olive oils
  • Aug. 21, 6 - 8 p.m. Heirloom tomatoes

Natures Palette: An Artists Perspective on Color in the Garden with Ann Chenoweth

Painter and teacher Ann Chenoweth examines how color behaves: how artists use it and how colors interact in your vision. Why do some colors pop and others do not? With this look at how artists use color and a simple outline of color theory, gardeners can also understand how colors interact in the garden. $20 members / $30 non-members
