A Million Blooms

The Garden’s celebration of spring! A parade of blooms unfurls as the weather warms: daffodils, tulips, peonies, roses and many more. Events throughout the season include Peek-a-Bloom with Peter RabbitMother’s Day Weekend, Spring PlantFestButterflies LIVE!, and activities in the Children’s Garden.

Spring Break
A great time for families to visit! Grab a Kid Quest at the admissions desk and explore. There are activities in the Children’s Garden; sidewalk chalk, hula hooping, digging and watering opportunities, plus you can climb the CWDKid’s Treehouse overlooking the Garden!

M&T Bank Butterflies LIVE!
April 6 –  October 14, 2018

Experience the wonderful world of butterflies! Butterflies LIVE! is an indoor exhibit in the Conservatory and is geared for all ages. Get up close and personal as hundreds of tropical butterflies feed, flutter and take flight all around you. Explore their origins, preferred habitats and lifecycles.

Origami in the Garden
Friday, April 13 – Sunday, September 30, 2018

Origami in the Garden is an exhibition of larger-than-life outdoor sculpture inspired by the art of paper folding. Santa Fe artist Kevin Box collaborates with his wife, Jennifer Box and origami masters Robert J. Lang, Te Jui Fu, Michael G. LaFosse and Richard L. Alexander to celebrate the art of origami in museum quality sculpture and educational programming.

Mother’s Day Weekend
May 11, 12 & 13, 2018
Regular Garden admission
A three-day weekend with many opportunities to honor and spend time with mom. Enjoy the popular Butterflies LIVE! exhibit, Origami in the Garden, shopping and dining and more:

  • The long weekend kicks off Friday, May 11 with National Public Gardens Day.
  • On Saturday, May 12, create the experience your mom would like. Stretch out on quilts in the Louise Cochrane Rose Garden and read favorite books. Explore woodland walks searching for fairies. Get down and dirty with digging activities. Help weave a Maypole, try the hula hoop and chase bubbles! (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
  • Sunday, May 15 is the popular Mother’s Day concert with Glenroy Bailey & Co. (1 p.m.– 4 p.m.). Food available for purchase in front of Bloemendaal House. Guests are also welcome to bring blankets or lawn chairs but no outside food or beverage. Activities in the Children’s Garden include “make-and-takes” for mom (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

National Public Gardens Day

On this day designed to promote awareness of public gardens, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will have its historic Bloemendaal House open to the public (11 a.m. – 3 p.m.) with free tours by knowledgeable Garden Guides (regular admission is required). Learn more about the original history of the house as the Lakeside Wheel (or bicycle) Club built in the 1800s.

Spring Plant Fest (plant sale)
May 4 & 5, 2018
Friday 9 a.m.– 5 p.m.; 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
No admission fee required; regular Garden admission to visit the Garden
The Garden’s plant sales are among the largest in the region with more than 40 vendors selling plants ranging from well-known favorites to rare exotics. Presented by Garden volunteers.

Extended Hours for Historic Garden Week on Wednesday, April 27 ONLY

To celebrate Historic Garden Week, the Garden has extended hours on this night only with historic Bloemendaal House open to the public; live music, dining, shopping and more.

In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, 3,000+ pinwheels are “planted” to represent children served this year by Prevent Child Abuse Virginia’s Healthy Families program.
