SCARECROW MAKING
FOR THE MODERN GARDEN

Celebrate the playful side of the fall garden in this creative, hands-on scarecrow workshop designed for adults. Once a practical tool for protecting crops, the scarecrow has evolved into a whimsical and expressive garden feature—and in this class, you’ll design one that reflects your own style. All basic materials will be provided, giving you a strong foundation to build your scarecrow. Participants are encouraged to bring their own clothing, accessories, or personal touches to make their creation truly unique. The workshop will begin with a brief look at the history and evolution of scarecrows, along with design tips and inspiration drawn from a curated collection of images. From rustic and traditional to quirky and artistic, you’ll explore different styles before creating your own garden character. With guidance throughout, you’ll construct and personalize your scarecrow to take home and display—adding personality, humor, and seasonal charm to your outdoor space.

Event Details

Please bring some old clothes and accessories that you may want to include in your scarecrow design. Wear close toed shoes. If there is time at the end we can setup a photo op in a designated space in the Garden. Be prepared to take the scarecrow home with you in your vehicle.

About the Instructor

Danny Cox, Vice President of Horticulture at Lewis Ginter Botanical GardenA leader in public horticulture for more than a decade, Danny Cox oversees the Horticulture Department, setting the vision for the curation, growth, and maintenance of botanical collections. He combines lifelong passions for plants and people by creating innovative landscape displays that inspire and delight visitors and celebrate Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s diverse membership.

Danny received his Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies from Florida Gulf Coast University and is a graduate of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce Associate Leadership Development Program, as well as the Strategic Leaders Program at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. He honed his expertise in garden construction, maintenance, layout, and design at the Naples Botanical Garden in Florida, rising through the ranks to Senior Horticulture Manager.

Danny has also served on the Board of Directors of the International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society and the Naples Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society. Most recently, Danny completed the Longwood Fellows Program, a prestigious leadership development program for public garden professionals which included a field placement with the Singapore National Parks Board.

While Danny has a strong knowledge of many aspects of horticulture and public gardens, he specializes in aquatic and tropical plants. His work with the waterlily collection at Naples Botanical Garden was featured in Better Homes and Gardens. As a new resident to the Mid-Atlantic Region, Danny is excited to explore all Richmond and its surrounding natural areas have to offer.
