OBSERVING FIREFLIES

Discover simple techniques to observe fireflies in nature and develop a nature journaling practice with Stephey Baker, local artist and avid urban gardener. Nature journaling helps you slow down, let go of the never-ending tasks on your to-do list, focus on the natural beauty of the world, and find a peaceful place within (even for just a moment). Using words, drawings, numbers, pictures, and even colors, nature journals document your experiences. You don’t have to be an artist, a writer, or a gardener to journal about the natural world. From this virtual course, you will:

–Learn a simple creative process for observing fireflies

–Access a variety of resources to help you identify fireflies

–Understand the life cycle and habitat needs of fireflies

–Explore firefly anatomy by creating a diagram in your journal

–Discover how to participate in free citizen science projects and make a difference in firefly conservation. Small changes can make a big difference in ensuring these enchanting insects continue to thrive!

 Journaling in nature improves observation skills and memory, engages your five senses, decreases your blood pressure, and allows you to discover something new every day. All you need to bring is your enchantment with fireflies along with paper and your favorite pencil. There are no artistic skills required to participate.

Interested in the Botanical Illustration Certificate program?  While new enrollments are on hold, this course offers guidance on how to cultivate your observational skills, which are essential in Botanical Illustration, and is one way to continue your artistic journey in the meantime.

Event Details

This course will be offered virtually via Zoom. A Zoom link will be shared with all students at least one day prior to the course beginning. Access to a recording of each class session will be shared with students within two days after each class session has occurred. All recordings will be available for 30 days after the course has concluded.

Supplies: Please have your favorite paper and pencil handy for each class. If you have a nature journal, use it!

Stephey BakerABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Stephey Baker is an artist specializing in pen and ink, watercolor, color theory, and graphic design for the professional artist community. Her lifelong connection to nature led her to botanical illustration, with a special interest in pollinating insects and the plants that nurture them. Stephey obtained her botanical illustration certificate at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. She believes in cultivating a curious spirit and finds joy in teaching others how to easily connect to their artistic side. Stephey lives in Church Hill with her rescued cats and dogs and tends to an urban garden full of life. In her favorite dreams, she can talk to Bumble Bees. Learn more at markedbythemuse.com
