BUILDING GOOD
GARDEN SOIL

Everything starts with the soil! Find out how to build your soil for spring gardening. Learn the characteristics of basic soil types, and how to analyze your own soils, including amendment techniques, drainage, and more. A garden walk shows you how Lewis Ginter horticulturists remediate different parts of the Garden’s soil. Instructor: Karin Stretchko, Agriculture Specialist, J. Sargent Reynolds Community College.

Our Garden continues to follow CDC recommendations and state guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Properly worn masks are strongly encouraged for indoor class participants regardless of vaccination status. The Garden reserves the right to implement additional safety measures. Any updates will be communicated prior to class, if possible.

About the Instructor

Karin Stretchko is an Agriculture Specialist at J. Sargent Reynolds Community College where she oversees the display gardens at the Goochland campus and the plant propagation program as well as teaching in the horticulture curriculum. She has a Master of Science degree from Virginia Tech, specializing in soil science. She previously was the Conservatory Horticulturist at the Garden and instituted the Garden’s water testing program.
