black swallowtail instars

by Lauren Adelman

On a yellow fennel umbel we see two caterpillars, one is small and darkly colored with a white splotch at its center. The other is yellow, black, green, and whtie striped, and large.

Two black swallowtail caterpillars atop a fennel umbel. One is an early instar and looks like bird droppings, while the other is large and brightly striped.
