The Garden’s celebration of spring! A parade of blooms unfurls as the weather warms: daffodils, tulips, peonies, roses and many more. Events throughout the season include Butterflies LIVE!, Peek-a-Bloom with Peter Rabbit, Mother’s Day Weekend, Spring PlantFest and activities in the Children’s Garden.

Spring Break
A great time for families to visit! Grab a Kid Quest at the admissions desk and explore. There are activities in the Children’s Garden; sidewalk chalk, hula hooping, digging and watering opportunities, plus you can climb the CWDKid’s Treehouse overlooking the Garden!

M&T Bank Butterflies LIVE!
April 12 –  October 14
Daily 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Experience the wonderful world of butterflies! Butterflies LIVE! is an indoor exhibit in the Conservatory and is geared for all ages. Get up close and personal as hundreds of tropical butterflies feed, flutter and take flight all around you. Explore their origins, preferred habitats and lifecycles.

Peek-a-Bloom with Peter Rabbit
Regular Garden admission
April 20-21

Peter Rabbit greets visitors and poses for photographs (both days). Concert on Bloemendaal Lawn (Saturday only; 2-3 p.m.) Food available for purchase in the Garden Cafe.

Spring Plant Fest (plant sale)
May 3-4, Rain or shine! Friday 9 a.m.– 5 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
The Garden’s plant sales are among the largest in the region with more than 40 vendors selling plants ranging from well-known favorites to rare exotics. Presented by Garden volunteers.

Extended Hours for Historic Garden Week
Wednesday, May 1 (Only)

5 p.m. – 9 p.m.
To celebrate Historic Garden Week, the Garden has extended hours on this night only with historic Bloemendaal House open to the public; live music, dining, shopping and more.

Mother’s Day Weekend
May 11-12
A weekend with many opportunities to honor and spend time with mom. Enjoy the popular Butterflies LIVE! exhibit, shopping and dining and more:

  • On Saturday create the experience your mom would like. Stretch out on quilts in the Louise Cochrane Rose Garden and read favorite books. Explore woodland walks searching for fairies. Get down and dirty with digging activities. Help weave a Maypole, try the hula hoop and chase bubbles! (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
  • Sunday is the popular Mother’s Day concert with Glenroy Bailey & Co. (1 p.m.– 4 p.m.). Food available for purchase in front of Bloemendaal House. Guests are also welcome to bring blankets or lawn chairs but no outside food or beverage. Activities in the Children’s Garden include “make-and-takes” for mom (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Virginia Daffodil Society Show
Saturday, March 30, show: 2 – 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 31, show: 10 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. 
Delightful prize-worthy daffodils and expert growers.

Richmond African Violet Society Show and Sale 
April 5 – 7
SALE: Friday, 12 – 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
SHOW: Saturday, 1 – 5 p.m.; Sunday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Visitors Center Atrium and Robins Room
Interesting and unusual African violets on display and for purchase.

Pinwheels for Prevention Garden 
Location: Terrace Lawn adjacent to the Cochrane Rose Garden
In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, 3,000+ pinwheels are “planted” to represent children served this year by Prevent Child Abuse Virginia’s Healthy Families program.
